Our  Centre

The Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center is located in the Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital of Bergamo, one of the largest and most modern hospitals in Lombardy, with over 900 beds, 36 operating theatres, 226 outpatient clinics, 9,000 square meters dedicated to diagnostics and 4,000 square meters to Emergency-Urgency, with a heliport operating 24 hours a day.

The Centre is part of the Cardiovascular Department, which has a long tradition for the treatment of all heart diseases, from birth to adulthood. The first cardiac surgery was performed in 1964. The first heart transplant was performed in 1985, while the first paediatric heart transplant in 1987, so far more than 850 patients have been transplanted.

The Centre consists of a team of doctors with many years of experience in the management and treatment of cardiomyopathies. The Team includes Clinical Cardiologists, Heart Surgeons, Electrophysiologists, specialists in advanced cardiovascular imaging (including the latest generation of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and 3-dimensional echocardiography), Paediatric Cardiologists, Cardiology and Heart Surgery teams specializing in cardiac transplants and heart failure management. There is a genetic laboratory with the possibility of genetic analysis with modern techniques ("next generation sequencing"). The Centre offers subjects with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy a complete therapeutic approach, including myectomy, for patients with  left ventricle outflow tract obstruction who remain symptomatic despite optimal drug therapy, automatic defibrillator implantation (ICD), in cases considered at high risk of dangerous arrhythmias, cardiac transplantation, in selected patients with advanced heart failure. In the last 15 years more than 250 patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy have been operated and therefore the Team has acquired considerable experience in the treatment of this disease.
